HMG
Human Menopausal Gonadotropin (HMG) is a purified gonadotropin preparation containing both follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) activity, extracted from the urine of post-menopausal women. Specifically, the dual FSH and LH content of HMG distinguishes it from isolated gonadotropin formulations, allowing for concurrent activation of both gonadotropin receptor pathways.
In contrast to single-hormone agents, HMG provides simultaneous stimulation of follicular development and endocrine signaling. Mechanistically, in female reproductive research, studies have investigated its role in driving ovarian follicular maturation and evaluating how combined FSH/LH activity impacts oocyte quality and systemic hormone levels.
Consequently, researchers frequently employ H M G in controlled ovarian stimulation protocols and fertility models to analyze how variable dosing regimens modulate folliculogenesis. In addition, male reproductive studies have evaluated its efficacy in supporting spermatogenesis in models of gonadotropin deficiency. Furthermore, the compound functions as a critical physiological tool for dissecting the synergistic crosstalk between FSH and LH signaling. Overall, H M G remains a foundational research tool for advancing reproductive endocrinology and assisted reproduction science.
